Identities are like languages. Both change over time because of repetition outside influence. Both have distinctive traits: accent and modulation. Both are passed along from parent to child, from friend to friend etc. Both help people to identify themselves with others. Both influence humor and ideas. Both can be secret and well known. One can be part of the other, but can never be interchangeable.
