Ruining Good Design

Designing is a very temperamental art form. Changing proportions and blurring significant characteristics can change a great design to a mediocre design. Often when designs are redone they become watered down versions of what they once were. Two companies guilty of ruining their designs are UPS and Citröen. Another company (it wasn't mentioned in the article, but it's relevant) is Comedy Central. There isn't anyone I know who likes the new typographic logo in comparison to the old image and type based logo. The new logo keeps the circular design, but uses rather boring type that doesn't fit with the station's image in terms of programming.

SPRING BREAK HOMEWORK (YES, ALL CAPS)

ALL THREE OF THE ARTICLES DISCUSSED DIFFERENT WAYS THAT WORDS ARE USED IN TYPOGRAPHIC WAYS. GLEN LIGON USES FAMOUS QUOTES DEALING WITH AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURE, GAYNESS AND "OUTSIDERS" AND CREATES AN IDEA IN THE WAY HE PORTRAYS THOSE QUOTES AND OR IDEAS. STEVEN PINKER TALKED ABOUT THE USE OF PROFANITY. PINKER CLAIMS THAT WAYS IN WHICH PEOPLE USE PROFANITY CHANGES WITH CONTEXT AND DOES NOT ALWAYS HAVE AN INAPPROPRIATE MEANING. JAMES GEARY SPEAKS IN A METAPHORICAL SENSE. METAPHORS SHAPE THE WAYS IN WHICH PEOPLE VIEW AND NAME THINGS. GEARY EXPLAINS HOW SUBSTITUTING A WORD WITH THE NAME OF ANOTHER, DIFFERENT MEANINGS CAN APPEAR.

Inspiration

Both the ted talks and the Art 21 all discussed the process of creating an idea. The two ted talks talked about how an idea stems out into different variations and the processes you can take that lead you to that final idea. The first of the two ted talks speaks of how one can arrive at final destination completely different than the original idea and how that original idea can be considered "nature", while the different ideas that spawn are "variations of nature". The second Ted talk speaks of how you can change particular ideas or commonalities by changing the context or something about the subject matter. The Art 21 is more broad as it talks about the different ways artists "ingest" the topics they "consume" and from which, create a theme in their work.
